These songs are based on 'speaking in tongues' texts by Anonymous Shakers of the 19th C.The fourth and fifth movement are attacca.
These two songs have somewhat unconventional texts. The first song, Love's Insomnia, employs only eight words-love/I/you/do/not/know/how/so. The second song, Corta Madera, March 23, 1969, is a setting of a letter to my brother and I from Charles (Charlie) Mott, a graduate of Cornell, Class of 1903. We had sent him a "ribald" card for his 90th birthday and this was his response to us. The songs were commissioned by Thomas Buckner, who gave the first performance.
